DETAILS

Care Instructions
Pereskia aculeata requires bright, direct sunlight for optimal growth. It prefers moderate temperatures and can tolerate some humidity. Water the plant when the soil is almost completely dry, but avoid letting it sit in water. It can be grown both indoors and outdoors, provided it receives enough light.
Soil
This plant prefers well-draining loamy soil. A mix that includes sand and organic matter will work well. Ensure the soil dries out between waterings to prevent root rot.
Fertilizer
Use a balanced fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 10-10-10. Fertilize during the growing season, typically every 4-6 weeks, to support healthy growth.
Repotting
Repot Pereskia aculeata every 2-3 years or when it outgrows its current pot. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage. Repotting is best done in the spring.
Propagation
Propagate Pereskia aculeata through stem cuttings. Take cuttings in the spring or early summer, allow them to callous for a few days, then plant them in well-draining soil. Keep the soil slightly moist until roots develop.
Pruning
Prune the plant to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged growth. Pruning can be done in the spring or after the flowering period. Use clean, sharp tools to make clean cuts.
Toxicity
Pereskia aculeata is not known to be toxic to pets or humans. However, it has sharp spines that can cause injury, so handle with care.
Additional
Pereskia aculeata can be used as a living fence due to its thorny nature. It also produces edible fruits that are rich in vitamin C. Regular monitoring for pests like aphids and mealybugs is recommended.
